The Quote of L. N. Tolstoy
All happy families resemble one another, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
Even if we can argue this claim, there is no possibility of its strict refusal as a kind of something overly generalising. Tolstoy indeed seems to have a point. But if the happy ones look so similar, shouldn’t we be able to derive any regularity in the happiness’s reason from their case and apply it to the others consequently. Preceding conclusion appears strictly logical in which exactly consists its frightening effect. Many techniques have been used to make people lucky in the right way, frequently constructed by some ideological specialist. It has never worked. Reader may recall communistic governments attempting to usher the era of not envying, not stealing and simply living in a harmony. In spite of failure of these efforts, many statesmen keep trying to introduce a special formula for happiness even nowadays. Why don’t they learn from the past? Couldn’t they perceive that although the happy families resemble, the causes of their happiness can, and often are, vastly different.
Nonetheless, one feature of mine remained unmentioned hitherto and it is my deep adherence to originality. Being similar to anyone respectably belittles your variability. But I would definitely not sacrifice my life just blossom as a profoundly original human being. Moreover, I would rather look completely the same as any other happy person than be sad. Hence this disturbing fact cannot change my mind.
I confess I haven’t genuinely researched the verity of Tolstoy’s claim. But I wasn’t my point. I leave this contemplation for the reader. My point was to prove that the absence of resemblance is not the paramount question. I believe it’s apparent. Happiness is too volatile to be counted and scientifically applied.
