Essay objective?

My 1113 comp 1 English professor assigned us a essay that requires us to choose 2 scholarly type articles on whatever up to date controversial topic and then synthesize the text putting the information together by comparing or contrasting them. 2 1/2 - 5 pages, 5 - 7 paragraphs.

We are writing to synthesize text but do I refer to these articles the entire time throughout the paper? Please instruct me in how exactly I should be going about writing this sort of paper assuming I have my 2 articles picked out.

Usually scholarly publications are referred to by the last name of the author and the year of publication all within brackets. For example. It has been postulated that that each sentence in a language has two levels of representation (Chomsky, 1957).

  • The full name of the publication would normally be written in the bibliography at the end of your essay, for example, Chomsky, Noam (1957), Syntactic Structures, The Hague/Paris: Mouton However, it's best to double-check with your professor just to make sure what his expectations are.
  • You can also use footnote numbers to connect the reference to the full name in your bibliography.
