Fifty-two percent of US presidents were born as “middles” - the middle children in a family. Birth order greatly affects human behavior and defines a child’s position in a family as well as his/her later position in life. Middles often contend for their place in the sun because their position doesn’t grant them any special rights within the family. The oldest children are leaders and easily benefit from all the “firsts” privileges. For instance, they don’t have any older siblings to make fun of them while learning to tie their shoes, which boosts their confidence. Parents much more gush over every “first” the oldest child achieves – a first ride on a bike and a first football match, which surely motivates them. To support this claim, Kevin Leman, an author of the book Why You Are the Way You Are, conducted a job interview for CEO in which 19 of 20 attendees were firstborns. On the contrary, the youngest children profit from being the baby of the family. Parents tend to let things slide once the last child is born and don’t longer care about every book their son/daughter has red during the English class in a last month Thus, they shoulder less responsibility than older siblings. But how about middles?
First of all, middles can actually benefit from their position in the long run. To illustrate, let’s imagine kids fighting over a toy. Peter claims the toy because he’s the oldest and therefore the most privileged one to play with it. Jenna, who is the youngest one, claims the toy because she loves being the center of attention and requires to have everything just for herself. Therefore, middles tend to be very skillful manipulators, they are perfecting the art of negotiation and patience right from birth. Certainly, there are other challenges and stereotypes middles have to face. According to psychoanalytic research carried out by Australian scientist Dr. Alfred Adler, the majority of middle born children suffer from the Middle Child Syndrome. This group of people displays lower self-esteem because of the lack of attention at home. Middle children are second children – there is always someone ahead of them. Frequently, they feel like they don’t belong in the family and their parents forget they exist. It’s mainly because a mother usually has a special bond with the oldest child and she pays extra attention to the “baby” of the family. Because of this lack of personal attention, middles have a stronger sense of fairness and justice. All these and many more factors greatly contribute to the child’s development and influence life, career and relationships.
It can be seen from the above examples that middles have to overcome many disadvantages. Thankfully, a complicated situation frequently turns out to be a contribution to a personal growth, as demonstrated by such powerful leaders as Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Bill Gates and Donald Trump, who are inspiring examples of successful people among middles.
