hello, this is my english work, and i would like you to mark any mistakes as you see them.

part I:

I chose the poem "As I Grew Older" to do my work on because I think that this poem talk about a very strong and universal value - achieving your dreams.

The 'speaker' in the poem talks about his dream, how it was when he was a child, and how it is now. The poem describes the intensity of the struggle the speaker has in order to achieve his dream and the change that took place during the struggle.

Another thing that made me chose this particular poem is its artistic features. One of those features is the metaphors in the poem- the sun as the dream, the wall represents the things that are in his way to achieve his dream, his hands are the tools he can use and the darkness is the feeling of desperation he had. Those are good analogs for his real dream hidden behind the poem. His dream is like the sun, and it will make the world a brighter place, and the slowly raising wall can tell us that the dream was once closer then now.

part II:

The era described in the poem is the 20s century; during the time when the cultural phenomena called the "Harlem Renaissances" took place. In that time, just after the African- American got free (the American civil war) the US Supreme Court declared racial segregation to be constitutionally correct. This has made most of the African-Americans that lived in the south of the US (there the racism was greater than the north), to move to the north, especially to Harlem close to New York City.

The new conditions in Harlem (and other similar places) made it possible for young artists to develop black art & culture. Those artists saw and felt the difficulties that pushed African-Americans back, and felt that they have to do something about it. They fought the racism throw their artistic creations, and most of their creations was about those difficulties.

The new movement of black pride and culture had a very large influence on the African-American rights and equality in the US and the rest of the world.

part III:

Langston Hughes was born in 1902 in Joplin Missouri. Langston Hughes grew up mainly in Lawrence, Kansas, but also lived in Illinois, Ohio, and Mexico.

Hughes's sense of dedication was instilled in him most of all by his maternal grandmother, Mary Langston, whose first husband had died at Harpers Ferry as a member of John Brown's band, and whose second husband (Hughes's grandfather) had also been a militant abolitionist. Another important family figure was John Mercer Langston, a brother of Hughes's grandfather who was one of the best-known black Americans of the nineteenth century. At the same time, Hughes struggled with a sense of desolation fostered by parental neglect. He himself recalled being driven early by his loneliness "to books, and the wonderful world in books."

Hughes was inspired from other writers, like Wolt Whitman and Carl Sandburg. Langston Hughes started writing poetry when he was in the 8'Th grade, in his classes. He graduated in a High School in Cleveland, and soon he wrote one of his most famous poems, 'The Negro Speaks of Rivers'. He then entered the Columbia University in 1920, but left two years later to work in menial jobs in order to see the world, so he went to Africa, France and Italy and then went back to the US. In his later years he showed his political and cultural opinions more widely, and was very angry on the black people who were not proud being black, and wanted to be white, even more than he was angry on the white people.

Langston Hughes was one of the most important artists in the 'Harlem renaissance', and he also lived in Harlem for some time. Most of his works was about race issues, and Langston was known to be in the far left side of politics, and he supported socialism. Langston's connection to black culture is seen in some of his works, when he puts features from jazz and other African-American music.

Langston Hughes died in 1967 from cancer, and was one of most brilliant and gifted black writer in the 20s century.

part IV:

Now, after we know what was Langston Hughes's dream, and when we know what historical events occurred during his lifetime, we can answer the project question:

"How is the process described in the poem (the dream, the slowly rising wall….) is reflected in Langston Hughes's life?"

From the background we can see that Langston's dream was that African-Americans will have equal rights as non-African-American civilians, and that black people will realize that they should not be ashamed of the fact that they are black, they should be happy about it, and then they will be able to truly achieve the full potential of black people.

We can see how Langston could have thought as a child that the dream is very close, and black people are close to be accepted as equals. Langston was born a few years after the end of the American Civil War, and the winning side was the side who claimed that African-American are even and should not be slaves. Also, as a child he was probably more optimistic. As he grew older, he saw more, and suffered more and more from racism. He and his family had to move to the North of the US, and as he traveled the world he saw that the situation in the US is no way near his dream, so he might have felt desperation, and also some criticism against him and his work didn't help.

Even that he had not actually got to see full equality between blacks and whites, he did help them get there, and he saw the light in the end of the racism tunnel in his last years.

part v:

The poem "As I Grew Older" describes the long way that everyone has to take in order to see his dream come true. It is the personal story of Langston Hughes's life goals and his hope, and it is a symbol of one of the greatest wins in the history, the black rights in America.
