Dear Kathy,
How are you? I have already read your letter and know what you are concerning about. Maybe you have bias and prejudice towards the Hong Kong's society. Your worry about sexual inequality in Hong Kong is partly not an obvious problem. Let me help you to ease your worry.
Without any doubt, local Chinese still remain some traditional value or practices in the society. Cooking meals, nurturing the children, tiding up the apartment may still be the responsibility of women.
However, this is only part of the scene in Hong Kong .
Hong Kong is a fair and diversified city. Why Hong Kong can be such prosper and successful. Because we the Hong Kong people desire for fair play rather than discrimination, egality rather than inequality. And what the government provided is a flawless law. What the law protected is an equal chance for competition. And what the society promoted is egalitarianism.
Equal chances are always provided to women in Hong Kong. In the past, when the conservative Chinese value is still the main force driving our society. Every important post in the society such as chairman, CEO is occupied by the men. The social status of women is low, they are not protected, they cannot find a job at a decent wage and their wages are not paid according to their wages. However, the situations are much improved in the 21st century when equality and liberal are emphasized in Hong Kong. Women are dignified, women are raised and their success marked the equality in Hong Kong. For instance, Chan Fang On Seng, a legend figure in Hong Kong, she served as the Chief Secretary of Hong Kong before and after the territory's handover to China from British colonial rule during 1993-1997. It proved that Hong Kong is a place where men and women can lead to success equally.
Not only do equality is promised in our daily life, but also in the working environment in our society. Maybe this is most you are concerned about. Undoubtedly, The Equal Opportunities Commission protects the equal opportunities of women and strike for equal rights at all costs. If you get pregnant, The Sex Discrimination Ordinance protects a woman from pregnancy discrimination in areas such as employment, and the provision of goods, facilities or services. If you cannot get a decent wage from the employer, the employer will be charged by the Commission for discriminating against an employee, on the ground of sex, in the terms and conditions of employment. By setting up of various laws, women are given the best protection in any cases. Moreover, most of the employers in Hong Kong are righteous and do their business in the light of day. And this helps to establish the vital protection for women.
To sum up, Hong Kong is an open-minded city without bias and prejudice. I hope this letter can ease your worry and induce you to come back to Hong Kong to work. And Hong Kong provides a great opportunity for you to give full play to your wisdom. See you!
Best Regards,
Christine
