Essay about Road Safety - IELTS Task 2

Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

People have different views concerning the question of how to make our roads safer. While strict rules play a significant role in the reduction of traffic injuries, I believe that other methods should be in consideration.

On the one hand, regulation on driving may put more of an emphasis on the importance of road society and change people’s minds. Drivers should be responsible for their faults if they ignore the safety of other commuters. For example, traffic fines are commonly used in many countries as a way to punish people for not following the rules. Thanks to these efforts, it could stop people from bad behaviors such as careless driving and chasing red lights. As a result, the number of traffic accidents would decrease, which leads to the improvement of overall transportation services.

On the other hand, there are some measures should be considered to tackle the problem. Firstly, citizens could use public transportation to go to work instead of driving cars as it would reduce traffic jams and effects on the environment. Secondly, the media could contribute to the progress by cooperating with governments to promote the idea of safe driving and raise people’s awareness. Finally, technology is another factor that should be considered when dealing with the issue because of its potential. For instance, Tesla and other tech startups are developing several prototypes of driverless cars in the hope of reducing traffic collisions to zero.

In conclusion, although traffic regulations can make a difference in road safety, I believe that other solutions are equally important.
