Essay about driving

I have never drove a car before. And I’m already 32.

I didn’t feel that it’s so necessary. And I had a few arguments against going to a driving school for a long time.

  1. Taxi in my city is pretty cheap, public transport is well developed.
  2. Having your own car is expensive pleasure because you need to buy it, than you need to repair, to buy some staff - there is always some problem and expanses.
  3. Problems with car require time to solve them - again repair, technical inspection, refilling, shopping, washing, parking..
  4. Oh yes, parking! In my city we often waste a lot of time and nerves until find place to park car. Sometime we park in 5-10 minutes walking from place we need to go. That’s stupid, specially if it’s raining. With taxi there’s no such problem.
  5. Responsibility. Driving is dangerous activity. So it frightens me.
  6. Alcohol exclusion. Come to party and refuse a glass of wine? Oh no!
  7. While you’re driving you must to drive. While I’m in taxi I solve dozens questions - make some calls, googling, chatting, reading and so on. Yes, you can listen audiobooks or call with loudspeaker but still you are limited in your actions.

But a few things made me change my mind.

I traveled in the USA and wanted to visit some national parks such as Grand Canyon and so on. We wanted to rent a car with my friend who is driver. But she got pregnant and I went on a trip alone. I had to change my plans and to buy a tour to Canyon. It was great, but I’m sure with car I’d have much more freedom. Then in LA I realised how difficult to live in some US cities without car.

So first thing I did after arriving home I went to driving school.

Now I’m excited and hope I’ll like driving.
