I have never drove a car before. And I’m already 32.
I didn’t feel that it’s so necessary. And I had a few arguments against going to a driving school for a long time.
- Taxi in my city is pretty cheap, public transport is well developed.
- Having your own car is expensive pleasure because you need to buy it, than you need to repair, to buy some staff - there is always some problem and expanses.
- Problems with car require time to solve them - again repair, technical inspection, refilling, shopping, washing, parking..
- Oh yes, parking! In my city we often waste a lot of time and nerves until find place to park car. Sometime we park in 5-10 minutes walking from place we need to go. That’s stupid, specially if it’s raining. With taxi there’s no such problem.
- Responsibility. Driving is dangerous activity. So it frightens me.
- Alcohol exclusion. Come to party and refuse a glass of wine? Oh no!
- While you’re driving you must to drive. While I’m in taxi I solve dozens questions - make some calls, googling, chatting, reading and so on. Yes, you can listen audiobooks or call with loudspeaker but still you are limited in your actions.
But a few things made me change my mind.
I traveled in the USA and wanted to visit some national parks such as Grand Canyon and so on. We wanted to rent a car with my friend who is driver. But she got pregnant and I went on a trip alone. I had to change my plans and to buy a tour to Canyon. It was great, but I’m sure with car I’d have much more freedom. Then in LA I realised how difficult to live in some US cities without car.
So first thing I did after arriving home I went to driving school.
Now I’m excited and hope I’ll like driving.
