When I was a senior in high school, I received an open house invitation to Virginia Commonwealth University. After visiting the school, I dreamed of attending, but was too afraid to apply. Over the years, I collected many VCU brochures at various transfer fairs and college information sessions that soon became reminders of my shortcomings. I hurt myself with a sharp tongue calling myself names like "loser" and "failure." I was convinced the world could see my inadequacy, so I wore these verses as skin but they were brittle and offered little protection. The depression I fell into led me to discover my true self. Eventually, we must learn that the universe does not coddle a shrinking violet. Humbling ourselves to the point of being dysfunctional is not only a disservice to us, but to the world. Denying the wonderment of our being is submitting to a falsehood. VCU is a place where open, expressive, and diverse people commune. From the moment I heard of VCU, it simply felt right. The experiences I read from alumni and current students over the years have only solidified my convictions. I plan to major in journalism I no longer look at the VCU booklets as source of shame, but as one of empowerment. Now I hold them up as a testimony to my devotion and perseverance. I am no longer afraid to leap for fear that no one will catch me. I am confident in my ability not only to stand on my own two feet, but to thrive.
