Nowadays, most large companies operate multi-nationally. To what extent should those companies have responsibility towards local communities in which they operate?

My answer

It is now a common practice for businesses to open their offices around the world. Once set up, companies inevitably begin to bring about change in the neighbourhood to where they expand, and these companies should definitely take into account these impacts.

First and foremost, businesses are fully responsible for environmental effects as a result of their business misconducts. Ignorance of their role in protecting the environment is highly likely to infuriate the related communities. A catastrophic pollution-related incident occurring in Central Vietnam last year sets a prime example for this. Tonnes of fish in the area died of contaminated water because untreated waste was released into the sea. As a consequence, numerous fishermen lost their source of income. Had the accused firm considered the negative effect of its decision on the environment and regarded the fishermen as its stakeholders, the unfortunate mass killing of fish would not have happened.

In addition to their part in environment protection, small and large businesses alike must take responsibility for the health of citizens of the surrounding communities. The way forward is for companies to sign a business ethics agreement with local community leaders. For instance, factory noise should be constrained to a durable level, exceeding which would result in health damage. Moreover, industry waste should be disposed of properly to prevent potential diseases and epidemics. If any violations of the agreed upon terms are found, the businesses should be prosecuted and made to pay compensation for the damage and losses of the affected party.

All in all, by not taking environmental and health impacts lightly, enterprises around the globe can achieve sustainable growth.
