Especially given what you've been through

Hi

I have a question about the dialogue below.

Nanna: Sorry for eavesdropping, dear. Did I hear you have plans tonight?

Violet: Yeah, this girl, McKenna, invited me. I think we're going to a few parties.

Nanna: That's great news. I know it's hard starting over, especially given what you've been through. Great loss is never easy.

Violet: Thanks, Nanna.

Could you please tell me what exactly "given" refers to in this context? I know what "be through" means but I can't understand the use of "given". Could you please help me out? Thanks in advance.
