Escapes

The female hostage escapes the gunman, who's busy firing at the guard, and runs toward the door.

1) Is "escapes" used correctly and is it a natural choice here?

2) Is "busy" natural here?

3) Would "shooting" be a more natural choice than "firing" or are they equally natural?

Since there is only gunman/hostage taker, would you prefer this sentence more:

The female hostage escapes the gunman, as he's busy firing at the guard, and runs toward the door.
