errors in sentences

John and Peter were traumatised by what they had seen in a haunted house. From then on, they did not dare to go near that house again, even in the day. They have become very timid.

Could you let me know whether the underlined portion is correct? Are there any other errors in the sentence?

Thanks in advance.

You might say, 'they have not dared', using the present perfect to indicate that the action continues into the present time.
'Even in the day' is better expressed: 'even during the day' or even in the daytime'.

I'm not aware of anything that says that the one form is used for the past, but I think your suggestions do sound better.
