In each sentence below, which part is incorrect, and how should I make it right?

2. It is (a) that is wrong: it should be 'despite the pain' or 'in spite of the pain', as Philip has already shown you. However, the original sentence does seem to contain other oddities. I would expect the correct sentence to read like this:

Despite the pain he suffered, William managed to get a lot of work done before his mother
