I am afraid I still have no idea :-s

Why 'near'? Can't near be equated with about here? You see,
"within the 50 years" "within the about 50 years" "within the near 50 years".

Nope. 'Near' when it means 'about' is a preposition, not an adjective.

Exploration of the Solar System is (continuing) and at the present rate of (progress) all the planets will have been contacted (within) the ((*next)) 50 years.

just my opinion

note: because "within" is (prep.) + (noun)
"near" is mean "about" (adv.)
"next" is mean near (adj.)
so, next(adj.)+ years(noun) is ok

"next" is a good answer.

Thank you all. Emotion: smile Actually, the answer doesn't matter. I know the answer. But I just don't know why. :-s

And as Mr. Micawber

"We're planning to move to Australia in the near future." "near" is an adjective.
"Today there are about 900,000 American Indians." "about" modifies 900,000. Yes, it means "approximately".
Next: Yes, it can be taken as "following", which it does in the original post.

If you want to describe it as approximately, you can say "within about 50 years".
