Err? Er?

Hi, I'm writing a poem, and the meaning of what I want to say is "before you find someone." Isn't there a word, something like "err" or "ehr" that's a bit archaic, that means "before"? I'm pretty sure I've heard that, but I don't know how to spell it! Thank you!

How about the palindrome, "Able was I ere I saw Elba"? (the same frontward and backward) I think it's Napoleon saying he was doing okay before they exiled him to the island.

Yes indeed, 'ere' is popular in classic English poetry. It's an Old-English word that I think came from German(? aer?) and means before.

I believe you're looking for "ere".
