Speech & Pronunciation

Era

Hi,

Nearly all online dictionaries available through 'OneLook' point out this word allows two different pronunciations.

The first sound can be either like in "air" or like in "ear"(?)

Which of the two pronunciations is commonly heard in AmEng? ( .... or at least in your area/community/office, etc.?)

--- Thank you for your comments!

"Air" sounds like some regional accent along the lines of the merry/marry/Mary divide. I hear either a long or short "e". I use the short "e", myself, but you hear both, with long "e" predominant, I guess.
