Equities

Hi, there
Would equities have got through the regulators?
Here is the full text(last sentence of the article)
http://www.economist.com/node/21547997

At first I thought equities here mean shares, but the whole sentence doesn't make sence to me and context.
Then I find on Internet that equities also mean Roma knights. It makes a little sence to me, but I think that I might go too far from the article.
Please explain to me what equities means here, also the meaning of whole sentence.
Thank you!

Equities are just stock shares. The point is that buying stock is also risky, so the regulators might have banned small investors from the stock market, too. From InvestorWords : equities: An instrument that signifies an ownership position, or equity, in a corporation, and represents a claim on its proportionate share in the corporation's assets and profits.

'Stock shares get throught...' is hard to understand.
You mean the sentence is saying 'Would buying or selling equities have got through the regulators', which implies micromanagement is too much.

No. If regulators are regulating 'risky investments', then they should also regulate dealing in common shares of publicly traded stocks.

Get through the regulators = escape regulation
