Equipment or gear?

Hi,

I interchangeably use "electronic gear" and "electronic equipment" to refer to my computer and its peripherals (i.e. keyboard, modem, printer, etc.) Which one is more appropriate and why? Either way, I think we can all agree that it's better than saying "my computer and stuff" or "my computer and (insert the s-word here)".

Hi, I would say 'equipment' is more common, and that the use of 'gear' suggests that the person is using computer jargon. In computer stores, I'd say salespeople always use the word 'equipment' with ordinary customers. When I used to work in the computer business years ago, we never said 'gear'.
