Epistle side and Gospel side of Alter

The priest stands on the Gospel side of the Alter - left hand side facing the audience.

Right hand side of the Alter - Epistle - right hand side facing the audience.

I'll take it from a different perspective. As you walk into a church, the Gospel side is on your left, the Epistle side on your right. The terms come from the former (mostly) custom of from which place the lessons are read.
