I read this somewhere in the paper: one guy told his friend "your epidermis is showing", and he got mad. Could anyone tell me what exactly is the meaning of that term? Thank you!

I did look that word up in dictionary before posting this subject. What I don't understand is: why the other guy got mad when "epidermis" was used on him? It's unreasonable for me. Thank you!
Because it's a complicated word for "skin" most children won't know it. It sounds like you're showing something embarrassing (like your underwear) so the person will be surprised and perhaps embarrassed and say something like "What? What's that? Where? For how long?"
