epidemic size

Hello,

"In the past decade, there have been several outbreaks of epidemic size of childhood disease."

What does "epidemic size" mean?
Would someone paraphrase this sentence for me?

Thank you in advance,

Without looking it up, an epidemic is the spread of an infectious disease which, for a time, the authorities are unable to control. That is, the number of cases continues to mount. Aids is a good example.

  • A more extreme example would be the new buzz-word, pandemic, in which a disease spreads out of control across the whole world.
  • The current chatter is about asian bird flu taking on such proportions.
