Epidemic, pandemic, endemic

Hi.

Would you tell me the difference between endemic, epidemic, and pandemic?

I personally can distinguish them, but I would be grateful if you could tell me the key difference between each, so it would be easier for me to teach these words.

I know endemic can only be used as an adjective but epidemic and pandemic can be used both as a noun and adjective.

That would be great if you could provide examples for each.

Your time and help are highly appreciated.

Regards

Hi My dictionary does have endemic as a noun but I agree with you - that is unusual. My own view is.. - epidemic - something that starts out in one place but then spreads out from that place to other places quite rapidly - endemic - (describing) something that starts in one place and then becomes predominant and constant in that place (but not spreading) - pandemic - something that is spreading across a whole region and might affect anyone over that wide area Regards, Dave

Oh - and the examples..

- The flu epidemic seems to have started in Liverpool but has rapidly spread to Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield

- This type of flu has become endemic in Liverpool - very many people are now getting it in Liverpool

- The flu has spread across many towns in the north of England. It is becoming pandemic in that part of the country
