Grammar

Environment is the conditions and influences in which people carry on a particular activity.

Could anyone help me understand the following ? What does 'carry on' mean here? What does a whole sentence mean as well? And what is the grammatical role of 'in which'?

Environment is the conditions and influences in which people carry on a particular activity.

Top answer

"carry on a particular activity" just means to do that activity. "in" is a preposition and "which" is a relative pronoun. When a relative clause modifies a noun that is logcially the object of a preposition, the preposition can be moved before "which": I live in the city -> the city in which I live I work at a restaurant -> the restaurant at which I work I escaped from prison -> the prison from which I escaped etc.

Thanks for your informative information. Could you please tell me how the following senetnce would be if we use preposition as the object of the preposition? Like the examples you gave .

"Environment is the conditions and influences in which people carry on a particular activity."

A preposition cannot be the object of a preposition. It may be that you meant to write "noun as the object of the preposition". If so, I have already shown this when I wrote:

Sorry. Yes. That was what I meant and I made a mistake.
GPYPeople carry on a particular activity in certain conditions and influences. These conditions and influences are called "environment".
Great.
