enumerating

Hi people!

I'd like to know if the following sentence is correct:

"About quality control problems, we decided to make a list including the most important providers and try to obtain discounts for large quantities of material."

Is this sentence correct? Or should it read:

"About quality control problems, we decided to make a list including the most important providers and to try to obtain discounts for large quantities of material."

Are there any rules governing enumerations when headed by a verb?I tend to read the sentence as: we decided X and X (i.e., to do X and to do X), and NOT we decided to X and X.

Thanks a lot!

Mara.

PS: Can you spot any other mistakes in the sentence?

Hello Mara As I am a mere learner, I think I am not qualified to correct your writing. But if you don’t mind, let me say my opinion. (1) Your writing seems nice to me.

  • But I think the expression "about the quality control problems" is too informal for your context.
  • If I were you, I would choose a more formal version such as "in respect to the quality control problem".

Here again, I would agree with you. If the repeating clause follows the same pattern (eg that of an infinitive verb) then it has also to start with 'to' : '...decided to make..... and to try....'.

Also, I think 'about' isn't usually used to open the sentence. I'd rather say : 'Regarding quality control problems' or 'As far as quality control problems'. But I actually don't know if there i

In light of Paco's reply... I stand corrected :
- "I would like to take a break and [] have a cigarette..." : no need for repeating 'to' since the sentence is short enough.
- "We decided to make a list of all the possible suppliers and to try to get a discount on their products : the sentence is probably long enough to justify repeating the 'to' ?
