Entrust sb with sth

The Sultan entrusted him with the governing of the Sanjak.

Does this sound stilted? Would 'appoint him' sound better?

Wikipedia informs me that a Sanjak was a territory or division in the Ottoman Empire, often with 100,000 occupants; so it was no small responsibility. Often the responsibility passed down to a son. To me ‘appoint’ seems more appropriate.
