Vocabulary

"enter or join or participate in"

Hi guys Please give me your opinion on this matter of 'enter or join or participate in'. For example, 'I entered the science contest.' In the sentence above, can I use 'joined or participated in' intead of 'entered'?

"Entered" means you signed up for the contest. There is no mention of what happened after that. "Joined" is not really clear about the extent of your involvement in the contest.

  • Maybe you just signed up, and maybe you participated, too.
  • "Participated" would mean you entered/joined the contest because you would have to do that to participate.

Oh, thanks a lot. Your comments would be a great help~
Anyhow Enter means in my context 'signs up' and its meaning doesn't imply participate or join. Right?

There is no reason to enter a contest unless you wish to participate. Entering any competition is the first step of participating, so entering does imply participation. By entering you declare yourself to be a contestant, a participant.
