Enough?

I found the following sentence, and I’d really appreciate your help with it.

Enough of the people who heard me make the speech appreciated my sincerity that I made it to the finals.

Usually, “enough” is combined with infinitives and “so” is combined with that clause, right? Is this an informal way of putting it?

If I were to rewrite this, could I just say, “So many of the people who heard me make the speech appreciated my sincerity that I made it to the finals.
