I'm not sure, I'd say 'They had a great time' or 'They enjoyed themselves.'

- They enjoyed (watching TV. )
[enjoyed what? = watching TV (noun)].

- Did you enjoy your meal?

[enjoy what? = their meal (noun)].

If people are having a great time, they are enjoying themselves. We don't normally overdo the idea of enjoyment.
