I'm a native English speaker in the US, and I've never used the word "engross" in speech or writing in my life. Furthermore, I've heard it used in speech only twice in my life, and both times the person mispronounced it as: enn-GRAWS. Perhaps this is because the word "gross" is a negative slang term, and the person didn't want to sound offensive. I have to admit that at those times I didn't
