Vocabulary

English word for a particular car movement.

Is there a word or expression in English for the following movement to turn your car in a (narrow) street.:

You start with a 90 degree left turn and stop; then a 90 degree right turn backwards.

It is not just "turn your car" or something like that (that is too general). The characteristic movement is that you move forward to an end point and backward again. In mathematics such an end point is called a "cusp". In Dutch we call such a movement a "steek".

There's a thing called "a three point turn," described in the CA driving manual. That may be what you're thinkng of. It's for reversing direction in a narrow street, in which a U-turn is illegal or not physically possible.

Interesting! In knitting, a steek is an extra section knit into a garment where it will eventually be cut. The word can also refer to the cut itself.
