SURFING
By: Taylor May

It was a summer day in the late 1990’s. I lived in Hawaii. There isn’t much to do in Hawaii besides look at girls in skinny bikinis and try to improve your surfing techniques. My best friend was named Nathan. We always figured that guys that could surf the best would attract the most women. I mean sure surfing was fun, but finding babes was a blast.
One day Nathan and I were down on the beach lying on our towels while watching the girls walk by. Nathan got up and left in a hurry. I figured that he had just left chasing after another girl who would turn him down. When Nathan returned he handed me a block of something that I’d never seen before. He said, "Here, put this on your feet." "Right," I laughed. "No man, I'm serious. This is wax, just put it on your feet" Nathan's sense of humor is really high, and sometimes it was impossible to tell when he was joking. Like when I was sixteen years old he convinced me that I looked twenty-one and insisted that I should go into a liquor store to buy beer. Well of course I believed him, and right on into the liquor store I went. "You have ID?" the store owner glared as I set the alcohol on the counter. I thought that setting five cases of beer on the counter would make the store owner think that I buy and drink beer all the time. "Uh, I must have left it in the car." I replied in an unsatisfied voice.” Well, you best be going and getting it don’t you thing?” So I just stepped outside and took off running. Nathan laughed for five minutes after he caught me. He said that he swore I really looked twenty-one. After that incident and a few others including a striptease bar, I remained skeptical about this wax deal. "It's for your board. Not your feet." Nathan assured me. "Yeah. But look, it removes all the grease and stuff so you get better traction." I kept quiet. "I can't believe you don't believe me!" He grabbed the wax, dropped butt-first onto the sand, and began rubbing it against his heel. "All the best surfers are doing this. I heard about it at a contest. It works, but you don't trust me." "I trust you," I replied. "Just not right now." "Whatever, man. You'll see, though."
What happened next was so perfect. We went marching onto the beach with the board under my arm; I briefly caught an eye on the medium-sized waves breaking against the outer reef. As I planned the best passage through the water, Nathan elbowed me. I followed his hand pointing toward a pair of surfers seated on the sand. They were a couple of Filipino guys, which was unusual in Hawaii. They had these tiny boards with two fins. The hip thing before these was big boards with three fins. I was never able to understand why these new styles cost so much; I mean they were smaller for goodness sakes. At first, I wondered what Nathan was pointing out, the Filipinos or their gnarly boards. Suddenly, I realized it. Sure enough, they were rubbing wax against the bottoms of their feet! I shook my head as Nathan's smile grew bigger and bigger, an expression which grew even more when we saw the Filipinos surf. Spray flew over the backs of waves as they carved their turns, perfectly completing sets of 360s. These guys looked like true pros.
After one of them whipped around and soaked us with spray, Nathan could contain himself no longer. "Told you! Ha ha" he laughed. "Okay, you win," I said while putting on a fake smile.
So I continued rubbing this wax stuff on the bottom of my feet. I decided that maybe Nathan was right, maybe this wax really does work. I knew that this was my true chance to reel the girls closer to me.
I got on my board. As I swam out there I dazed off. I could see the girls standing all around giving me kisses and hugs after I finished my wave.
I stood up onto my board. This was it, it’s all or nothing. Boom! When I woke up on the shore there were definitely girls all around me. Yeah they were lifeguards. Not just lifeguards they were ugly ones. In the background I found Nathan laughing like a child.
