English Measures - Height

Good evening -

I am needing to write out the phrase "4 foot 4", without the use of punctuation symbols. I have checked the Gregg Reference Manual without success, and several places on the internet. Some sources say 4-foot-4, some say 4 foot 4, and some others say 4 feet 4, since the word "foot" is technically incorrect. I also pondered whether 4-foot 4 might be correct.

The sentence is "She is 4 foot 4, 115 pounds."

Thanks for your time.

" There are probably as many opinions as there are people whom you ask. To my mind, the sentence above is fine and the meaning doesn't get clearer if you add hyphens. You are also right about 4 foot 4 being technically incorrect.

  • To my mind, the sentence above is fine and the meaning doesn't get clearer if you add hyphens.
  • You are also right about 4 foot 4 being technically incorrect.
  • However, that's what almost everybody says, which makes it idiomatic English!
