English language grammar

Which of these 2 is correct:

"They had been married for two years when his wife died.", or

"They were married for two years when his wife died.

The thing is, i do not really understand the difference between past perfect + past (used when a certain action happened before other action), and past continuous + past simple (also quite used when we want to express the duration of some action is interrupted by other action).

The first one looks correct, since it has a duration (two years), but the second one could be correct since it has interruption of that action?

Top answer

" Both are correct grammatically. Most native speakers would use the past perfect since it emphasizes the time when they were a married couple.
