English Improvement in School

Question

My Kids are not so fluent in English. Their teachers used to talk in English, but within peer group, they use Hindi only. What is the best method for School to promote English so that kids should use English while interacting with peer group at School ?

Hi,
I really know this problem, I am confronted with it nearly every day. Unfortunately most children aren't interested in the english language and aren't convinced that english is very important for their further live , either.
In my opinion listening to music makes a huge difference between reading "boring" texts in books and studying grammar.Watching the lyrics of the music, which the pupils listen to. And then doing some translation practice and singing to the lyrics. That promotes the pronounciation and enhances the vocabulary as well.
The lessons should be organized interesting. Not every day the same procedure, but rather include new elements of teaching english. The most important factor is fun. This might be a idea for promoting english , while interacting at peer group.

Of course sometimes we need to use L1 whe we teach a foreign language especially with abstract subjects. So, if it is not done so frequently, we should feel secure about using L1 in our lessons. Even sometimes using L1 with young learners makes them feel secure.

I think the only think that should be done is to make a balance. .To make your kids talk in English, games and role plays are perfect solutions. Give them chunks before the games and make sure that they understand every single word and then write them on the board. Later, play the game with them together and also allow them to look atht he board when they forget anything or confused. Talk in L1 only when needed. With this way, they will get used to talking English and even talking in fro of other people.

When you see that your students are ready for interacting without getting help from the board you can make them talk with one another with the help of chunks and then slowly make them create new sentences themselves.

I see it like teaching a child how to ride a bicycle. You hold him with your hands first and then slowly you let him ride.
