1) "If I had to go shopping, I would have preferred to go to Karachi." You can't say "If I had to go to shopping", but you can say "If I had to shop".

2) "I have had very bad tidings." Tidings is plural, just like "news" ("I have had very bad news"). Note that tidings is not common in writing/speech today.
