English Grammer

Hi guys,

I have encountered a grammar related question. Can someone help me explain what does the word that and which specifically refer to in the sentence below:

"Cultural anthropology thus means ‘knowledge about cultivated humans’; that is, knowledge about those aspects of humanity which are not natural, but which are related to that which is acquired."

Thanks very much in advance!

"That is" is a literary phrase for "in other words", or "to be precise"

It comes from the Latin "id est" abbreviated to "i.e." See entry C2
