Hi eveybody, Im a newbie to English Grammar.I was encountered a problem while reading voa news websites.

The sentence I don't understand below here:

Turkey has supported Syrian opposition fighters in their efforts to overthrow the Assad government.

If I understanding correctly,Turkey was support the efforts ,not fighters ?I m confuesd about what exactly Turkey support and why ' fighters makes efforts' will descripted as 'fighters in their efforts'?
