ENGLISH grammar check!

Hi, I have a question regarding this sentence!

But behind these considerations is an unstated assumption: one person’s ten unaided fingers are what produce the sounds.

I'm not sure if it's grammatically ok to use what at the point that I've underlined in the sentence. Does it seem somehow awkward?

Thanks in advance for your answers! Emotion: smile

CHJ one person’s ten unaided fingers are what produce the sounds.

I think you could use notional agreement for this.

one person’s ten unaided fingers is what produces the sounds.

But just because I prefer it doesn't mean you have to use it.
