can someone tell me which one is correct and why?

They both need a comma before "but". Don't they teach that comma any more? Nobody seems to realize it's needed.

They both need a comma before "but". Don't they teach that comma any more? Nobody seems to realize it's needed. Other than that they are both correct. The progressive stresses the duration of his intention.
