Which is correct and why - If I was a fireman or If I were a fireman?

both are correct "was" is infromal and is used in spoken english were" is formal and used in written english However, if it's an exam question it's better to go for "were" as the answer Now to answer "why".. I am afraid i don't have an answer to that . that's how english lanuage works.
