English expression

Hey! Emotion: smile
I've just got a quick question. In an exam we had to read a speech about the American Dream and then summerize it. One of the sentenced that I wrote was:
As the most challenging, he describes the constant racial Segregation and says that this has destroyed America in the past, therefore not being a positive Impact on reaching the American Dream.
Is the therefore okay in that sentence or should I have used another word for it?
Thanks for your answers Emotion: wink
