English and the definition of words.

In my attempt to seek knowledge and understand that knowledge I first must understand a language to use. I love the English language but hate synonyms, are what defines the specific word I want to use. I now try to write and then edit the words into the sentence. Yet the reader might interprete a word as mening something else. How can I eliminate this problem of interpretation of the reader with so many definitions to choose from when both the writer and reader especialy the reader might assume the writer meant this and not that? pljames

There may be no easy solution to your problem. Even native speakers have problems when they choose words from the huge English vocabulary. The only guidelines that I can suggest are: (l) Read as much as you can (including the comic strips), (2) Converse as much as possible with native speakers, (3) Watch a lot of English-language television and movies, (4) Listen carefully to song lyrics, (5) Consult the best dictionaries and thesauruses, and (6) In general, choose the shorter rather than longer word.
