English A-Level student - TESOL or CELTA course?

Hello,

I would really appreciate your advice on whether I should take a TESOL or CELTA course.

I am a native English speaker and am currently studying for my A-levels. I would love to take a course at International House Language School, London that enables me to teach English because I'm going to Uganda in my gap year. I have had no experience of teaching English but I am studying it as an A-level and hope to read the subject at university. Therefore the course will also help me in general with my grammar etc.

The students I will (hopefully!) be teaching in Uganda won't necessarily be adults - there will be a range of ages and I know that the CELTA course is aimed specifically at teaching adults. However, 18 year-olds are allowed to take the course. I know that this course is well-respected internationally too.

The TESOL course on the other hand is aimed at teaching students that have a wide range of ages. However, the course is aimed at 20 year-olds and over (although exceptions can be made for younger students). I've heard that the course isn't as well respected as the CELTA course either...

Which course do you think would be best for me? I have done some research but all the forums appear to be for people who have already taken a teaching course/who aren't native English speakers/who don't seem to be as young as me!

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Best wishes,

Harrie

Hello Harrie, I would go for the CELTA, because it is more respected. Your not really going to become an expert and figure what your doing until you really start teaching. The CELTA may help to open up the doors you need in order to gain the experience you want.
