Grammar

English

Hi, I found this sentence in the Longman dictionary and I have a question about its grammar.

"An artist's overriding concern is to achieve the highest standard possible."

Why did they use "possible" here? it's an adj and was used after a noun without to be. I think it has to be "as much as possible"

The sentence seems correct to me. "Possible" can be used with verbs, nouns, and adverbs. In the sentence above, I think it's been used after the verb "achieve". "The highest" is a superlative adjective, "Standard" is a noun.

I can say, for example:

-I want to make something possible.

-I want to make it possible.

This is a variant of "the highest possible standard". With superlatives (highest) you can put 'possible' after the noun. The meaning is "the highest standard which is possible".

We should do this at the soonest possible moment.
