English

Hi, I am a english learner and I have some problems so I need help

I wonder when we use an adverb before a verb and when we use an adverb after a verb

for instance: The door opened automatically when we walked

Of course I automatically said yes

Top answer

It is somewhat complicated because adverbs are rather flexible in their positioning. These are equally natural: The door opened automatically as we walked up to it. The door automatically opened as we walked up to it.

  • It is somewhat complicated because adverbs are rather flexible in their positioning.
  • These are equally natural: The door opened automatically as we walked up to it.
  • The door automatically opened as we walked up to it.
  • However, it is unnatural to place an adverb between the verb and its object, so this sentence is good: I automatically said yes and this is not: X I said automatically yes.
