" But there were strict Covid measures still in place inside and fewer nerves for A-level and AS students who had sight of their grades two months ago "

Hi guys, what does the phrase " fewer nerves" mean in this context ?

Does the word " nerves" literally refer to a part of our body having function to control our activities and thoughts ?

Thanks a million for your help !
