English

Hello, do you mind explaining the meaning of this sentence for me :

" They went to mass at Our Lady of Mount Carnel and saw the unifying and calming effect of the church "

I can not understand which is the meaning of " unifying" and "calming" in this context .

Why did the author write " calming" instead of " calm" as far as I know " calm" is both an adjective and a noun so I wonder if it can be replace "calming" .

Thanks so much !
