I'm a little bit confused. I can't remember if it is: There were a lot of people’s, There was a lot of people's or what. Is it 1 or 2 or is it something else

There were a lot of people.

People is a plural noun hence takes a plural verb. Secondly, I have never seen an apostrophe and s with people. Would you give me the complete sentence?
