Please help me identify if this part of the sentence is a phrase or clause:

"Despite the bad weather, the man headed out into the woods, leaving his cottage behind."

I would have thought, "leaving his cottage behind would be a participial phrase". Can someone confirm this and tell me the correct answer if I am wrong? Thank you.
