There seems to be an obvious error in the given sentence: the word "determination" is a noun and doesn't seem to match the two previous words, which are adjectives.

Of the given choices, d. is, of course, always a possible answer, and so we keep it at the back of our minds.

c. is out from the start because the phrase "engaged into" is ungrammatical.

This leaves a. and b

I agree with what you say except in respect of (b). (b) can be understood like this:


The students are engaged in their studies.
The students are fascinated by their studies.
The students are determined to complete their studies.

(a) is also allowable because, as you say, "engaged" and "fascinated" can stand by themselves. If I had to guess, I would guess that the set
